"You Gotta Be" by Des'ree was from her second album, I Ain't Movin.

According to Wikipedia, Des'ree said the song is pretty self explanatory, sometimes you just gotta be different people in different situations, "born out of me stopping myself and thinking everyday how you gotta be something. You have to be cool and calm in [one] situation, and then you have to be bold and strong in another situation."

"You Gotta Be" was actually more commercially successful in the US than in the UK, where Des'ree is from.

In the US, the song went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #2 on the Adult Contemporary, and #6 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.

The music video we see now is in black and white, however, it was actually filmed in color. The color was removed in post-production. The music video went on to be nominated for 'Best Female Video' at the MTV Video Music Awards. Des'ree unfortunately lost to Madonna's "Take A Bow."
