Throwback Thursday 'Macarena' by Los Del Rio (1993)

Way before TikTok had a new dance trend every week, there was 'The Macarena'! (See below for an instructional video on how to do 'The Macarena'. "Macarena" was a Spanish language song by Los del Rio that was originally released in 1993.

Los del Rio translated in English means Those From the River. The duo was formed all the way back in 1962 by members Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz Perdigones.

"Macarena" is about a girl named Macarena trying to get men to dance with her.

The version of "Macarena" that we are most familiar with in the US is the Bayside Boys Mix in 1996.

Wikipedia states, "'Macarena (Bayside Boys remix)' spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, becoming one of the longest runs atop the Hot 100 chart in history.^[12] The single spent its final week at No. 1 on its 46th week on the chart, recorded as the latest No. 1 single in Hot 100 history. Billboard ranked it as the No. 1 song for 1996."

"Macarena" also went to #1 on the US Pop Singles chart and #5 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, Mainstream Top 40, and Rhythmic chart.

Ultimately "Macarena" was a one-hit-wonder. In 2002, VH1 listed it at #1 on their 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders. It was also #1 on VH1's 40 Awesomely Bad No. 1 Songs.
