Throwback Thursday ‘Put Your Records On’ by Corinne Bailey Rae (2006)
Anytime a cover song gets popular, I feel it is my personal duty to let people know about the original!
"Put Your Records On" by Ritt Momney is a cover of the same song by Corinne Bailey Rae.
The song was the debut single in America from her self-titled debut studio album.
"Put Your Records On" was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2007 Grammys.
The song peaked at #64 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it went all the way to #6 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #8 on both Adult Alternative Songs and Smooth Jazz charts.
Corinne Bailey Rae's last full album release was in 2016 when she released, The Heart Speaks in Whispers.
Now, in 2020 "Put Your Records On" has resurfaced thanks to a version by Ritt Momney.
(The name Ritt Momney is a spoonerism for politician, Mitt Romney. A spoonerism is an error in speech in which corresponding consonants or vowels are switched between two words in a phrase.)
Ritt Momney was an indie band, but now it is the solo project for the member, Jack Rutter. Rutter has said that his mother listened to Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On" in the car a lot. He loved the song even calling it 'one of the greatest pop songs of all time.'
The cover song gained popularity thanks to TikTok.
Ritt Momney's version has so far reached #79 on the Billboard Hot 100.
