The Darkness is a rock band from Lowestoft, Suffolk, England. The band is made up of members Justin Hawkins (lead vocals, lead guitar), his brother Dan Hawkins (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Frankie Poullain (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Rufus Tiger Taylor (drums, backing vocals).

"I Believe in a Thing Called Love" was originally released in August of 2002 as a 3 part EP, however, it barely made a splash. The song was then put on the band's debut studio album, Permission to Land. "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" was the third single from that album.

The song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart, #23 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and #35 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. However, the song did very well in the UK. "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The Darkness just couldn't dethrone The Black Eyed Peas' "Where Is the Love?" from the #1 spot.

According to Wikipedia, "The song peaked at number 67 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart in February 2012 after Justin Hawkins appeared in a commercial during Super Bowl XLVI." Also, "In a 2020 poll, Classic Rock Magazine readers awarded the song the "Greatest Song of the Century (so far)."

The music video definitely helped The Darkness stand out! In the music video, the band is seen in a spaceship fighting aliens and monsters all while looking fierce in their glam rock ensembles. Just a normal day at the office.

The Darkness put out an album as recently as 2019 and are still kicking it as a band.
