Missy Elliott just received the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards so I figured why not also give her the honor of being this week's Throwback Thursday Song of the Day.

I mean, you know a song is a big deal when it changes the vernacular. I still say 'get your hair did' because of this song.

"Work It" came out in 2002 and was off of Missy Elliott's fourth album, Under Construction.

The music video for "Work It", like many of Missy's music videos, has many memorable moments. Most notably, the child dancers were a crowd favorite including Alyson Stoner, who also danced as part of the VMA Vanguard performance.

The video won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.

Unfortunately, "Work It" never made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. According to Wikipedia, "On the chart issue dated November 16, 2002, the song reached number 2, but because of the massive success of "Lose Yourself" by Eminem, it never reached number one. Instead, the song stayed at number two for ten weeks, a record that it shares with "Waiting for a Girl Like You" by Foreigner from 1981. Despite never topping the Hot 100 chart, the song topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for five weeks."

Following Missy Elliott's appearance with Katy Perry at The Super Bowl in 2015, "Work It" re-entered the Hot 100 at #35.
