Throwback Thursday ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ by Green Day (2005)
So, it's almost September which is why I chose Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" for this week's Throwback Thursday.
"Wake Me Up When September Ends" was the fourth single off of Green Day's album, American Idiot.
The song's main theme is loss. Due to that theme, the song has become a symbol for a lot of tragedies including Hurricane Katrina and 9-11.
The music video follows the storyline of a young couple in love and the boyfriend signs up for the Marines and is sent to the Iraq War. The couple is played by Jamie Bell and Evan Rachel Wood.
According to Wikipedia:
"Wake Me Up When September Ends" was written by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong about his father, who died of cancer in September 1982 when Billie Joe was ten.[1][2] Armstrong, at one point, dubbed the song the most autobiographical he had written to that point, considering it "therapeutic" but also difficult to perform.[3]
The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100.
