Throwback Thursday ‘Right Here (Human Nature Remix)’ by SWV (1993)
SWV, short for Sisters With Voices, are a R&B girl group from New York City. The group is made up of members Cheryl 'Coko' Gamble, Tamara 'Taj' George, and Leanne 'Lelee' Lyons.
"Right Here" was the debut single for SWV off of their album, It's About Time. The original "Right Here" did just OK. However, when the remix was released with a sample of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" it blew up!
The remix, according to Wikipedia, "became a number-one R&B single, selling 500,000 copies and earning a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.[3][4] According to Billboard, in 1993, the song spent 22 weeks on the US Hot 100 (18 of which were also spent in the Mainstream Top 40) and from 1993-94 it spent 34 weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, making it one of the most successful R&B songs of 1993."
The song never made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 though thanks to Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover" holding steady.
"Right Here (Human Nature Remix)" was not only on SWV's album, but was also on the Free Willy soundtrack.
The original "Right Here" varies just slightly lyrically from the remix. Only the first verse is tweaked and the rapped bridge was left out.
Fun fact: The voice you hearing yelling "S..., Double, U... To The V!" is actually a young Pharrell Williams.
It went on to be a common chant during SWV concerts.
"Human Nature" by Michael Jackson and this SWV version have both been sampled quite a bit. Wikipedia states, "'The "Human Nature' remix has also been sampled by the late rapper 2Pac on the track 'Thug Nature' from Too Gangsta for Radio (2001). R&B singer Chris Brown's song 'She Ain't You' (2011) samples Michael Jackson's 'Human Nature' and a portion of SWV's remixed version. 'Human Nature' was also sampled by Nas in the hit song 'It Ain't Hard to Tell' on his debut album Illmatic."
SWV are still together! Most recently they did a Verzuz in 2020 with fellow 90s girl group, Xscape.
