Again, this week, I have no cute backstory or timely reference as to why I chose this song. I just like it.

"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" was the first song from Jet's album, Get Born. The song was released in 2003 in Australia and The UK, however, it was released in 2004 in the United States.

Jet is an Australian band made up of members Cameron MunceyMark Wilson, and brothers Nic and Chris Cester.

According to Wikipedia, "The song hit number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it their first top 40 hit and their highest charting single; it also hit number three on the Modern Rock Tracks and number seven on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. Even though it did not hit number one like the next hit, "Cold Hard Bitch", "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" stayed longer on the charts and is the band's most successful song, often regarded as their signature song. The single has sold 1.3 million copies in the United States since 2012."

The music video is mostly in black and white. It features references to Jet's album, Get Born, as well as The Beatles' Revolver.

"Are You Gonna Be My Girl" has oftentimes been compared to "Lust For Life" by Iggy Pop and "Screwdriver" by The White Stripes, however, Jet claims they were inspired by Motown beats.

Chris Cester of Jet had this to say in response to the comparisons, "To be honest with you that kind of annoyed me a lot, because I always thought it was really lazy. People just go well "Lust for Life" is more well-known so that's what they go for, but if you listen to a song like "You Can't Hurry Love" (The Supremes) I think you'll find its closer to "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" than "Lust for Life" ever was. And that's what Iggy said as well."
