A throwback to childhood is always a great way to sucker someone into a movie. Disney has been doing it with the live-action remakes that are completely unnecessary. Now it's happening to Top Gun and I couldn't be happier.

The new trailer starts out the way the first one ended, with a shot of a now-retired F-14 Tomcat flying off out of the frame. Then it paints the picture that Maverick played again by Tom Cruise with the signature helmet, is the best and smartest pilot they could have teaching them things.

There are cool, cocky action hero one-liners and plenty of action that looks like a mix of real-life and CGI F/A-18 Super Hornets flying all over the place. It even looks like the shots of Tom Cruise in the cockpit look real the way his head is bobbing around as the jet torques his body.

The trailer ends with Maverick literally blowing the roof off a building in some sort of spacey looking aircraft.

Despite the incredible inaccuracy of how Goose dies in the original movie, I loved it. My dad tried to ruin it for me. He wasn't a Naval aviator, but he was a jet aircraft mechanic and supervisor for over 30 years in the Marine Corps and the South Dakota Air National Guard. He pointed out that (33-year-old movie spoiler alert) Goose could never have hit the canopy when the ejected from their plane because the canopy would have been long gone after the fast-moving air would have taken it far away. Maverick would never have been "locking up" a MiG 28, because that would have been Goose's job in the back seat as the radar intercept officer, and because there was no such thing as a MiG 28.

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to come out on June 26, 2020.
