This just in, the phrase "Bless Me, Father, for I Have Sinned" doesn't get uttered much in South Dakota, because not many of us profess to sin all that often when compared to people in other states.

We know that's not true. We're all sinners. We all sin every day. Lord knows there is certainly no shortage of temptations and different ways to sin in life.

One of my favorite lines from a movie comes from the 1989 motion picture "Fletch Lives."  You might remember the scene, Fletch is doing a little undercover investigative work on the set of Reverend Jimmy Lee Farnsworth's bible revival healing night TV show, when he gets called up on stage. The Reverend Farnsworth asks Fletch if he has sinned? Classic Fletch response, "Uh. Well, I've sinned. I didn't take any Polaroids or anything. But, yeah, I've sinned."

If you believe the findings from the gang at WalletHub who just finished releasing their list of 2022's Most Sinful States in America, evidently South Dakota residents haven't been spending a whole lot of time in a confessional recently. Mainly because we're not filled with a bunch of heathens and sinners. At least that's what we claim anyway.

Who knows, maybe we're all lying? The last time I checked, isn't that a sin? Yikes! What time is confession today?

WalletHub based its study on seven different sinful behaviors. Which included anger and hatred, jealousy, excesses and vices, greed, lust, vanity, and laziness.

South Dakota scored rather low in all seven of those different sinful categories. We claim to struggle the most with "anger and hatred." We showed up #19 in that category. We're at our best when it comes to dealing with "jealousy." With a ranking of #48 out of 50 states.

Let's face it when you live in South Dakota, what do you have to be jealous of, right?

According to WalletHub, South Dakota as a whole is the 47th least sinful state in America.

When it comes to the state that is supposedly filled with sinners, no big surprise here, that title goes squarely to Nevada. I mean they're the home of "sin city," for crying out loud. It only makes sense. Just think of all the sins being committed in Las Vegas every minute. The lines to confessionals in Vegas have to be miles long I'm thinking!

If you're curious to see how the rest of the nation stacks up when it comes to the topic of sin, you can check out WalletHub's 2022 "Sinful States" list here.
