You wouldn't think that the words 'South Dakota' and 'sushi' would go together. But like chilis in chocolate, it's a surprisingly delicious combination.

Yes! You can get good sushi in Sioux Falls, SD. You don't even have to look very hard.

The Roots of Sushi

Sushi as we know it has its beginnings in various traditional Asian dishes. It was the fast food of its time. Rice, seafood, and veggies. A quick meal for working people. What we think of as sushi, the rolled, tube-like form evolved around the turn of the 19th century.

The first sushi shop in the US is said to have opened in Los Angeles in 1906. The popularity of the dish emerged again in the 1950s and has grown steadily as quality ingredients and training have become more available.

Now in the 2020s, you can find good sushi in every state, even on the plains of South Dakota.

But, if you're just in the mood for sushi, the ready-made rolls at Hy-Vees in Sioux are a tasty choice. Fresh and delicious every time I've had it. And thanks to my daughter, I have it a lot.

I know, a grocery store and sushi may not sound like the ideal combination. I'm as surprised as you that it works. But it does.
