High Winds and Dry Conditions Raise Wildfire Risk in South Dakota
South Dakota has its share of dangerous weather events to contend with.
We have winter storms that bring strong winds and lots of snow. We have thunderstorms that bring wind, lots of rain, and everyone's favorite, tornados.
Flooding is common around these parts. Winds so strong they uproot trees are also a thing here. But wildfires? Outside the Black Hills, there aren't that many trees, especially outside town.

South Dakota Faces Wildfire Threat
But, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety is reminding us that yes indeed, fire should be on our list of concerns. Whether you call them wildfires, prairie fires, or wildland fires; they are dangerous and a real threat in South Dakota.
"High winds and abundant dry vegetation means high fire danger across the state. Fires will spread rapidly and may be difficult to control," officials said in a statement.
Fire Safety Tips from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety
When things dry out and the wind picks up that is a recipe for a wildland fire. To best protect yourself and your land, here are some tips from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety:
- Avoid open flames and using tools that spark outdoors,
- Don’t burn slash piles or use burn barrels until it’s safe to do so,
- Never park vehicles in tall, dry grass, or drag chains while towing, and
