Sioux Falls Police Warn AI May Be Used in Family Phone Scams
Think It’s a Loved One Calling? Police Warn of AI Scam Tactic
The Sioux Falls Police Department is warning the Sioux Empire about a rash of recent phone scams. The scammers may be using AI to imitate loved ones.
"The Sioux Falls Police Department has received multiple reports of scam calls where callers claim to be associated with a family member who is in distress," the SFPD said in a statement. Officials added that the scammers try to pressure you to "wire" money immediately from a specific location.
"It is possible that these scammers may be using artificial intelligence to replicate the voice of a family member," the Department said.

If you get a call like this, the police recommend that you immediately hang up and contact the family member. "Do not send money or provide personal information to the caller."
Phone scammers often employ high-pressure tactics, such as threats of arrest or fines, to obtain your personal information, including Social Security numbers or bank info.
Scammers may also demand that you use unusual payment methods, such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. Or offer unsolicited lottery wins, tech support, or claim to be some other official.
If you have questions or would like to report a call, please contact the Sioux Falls Police Department's non-emergency number at 605-367-7000.
