Nobody hands you a rulebook for garage sale-ing, but there are definitely rules.

Saturday morning. 7:15 a.m.

For some people, this is an opportunity to sleep in. But for serious garage sale shoppers across South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa, the day is already underway.

Coffee? Check. Cash? Check.

A vehicle with enough cargo space to haul home something nobody planned to buy? Absolutely.

Rule No. 1: The Start Time Is More of a Suggestion

A garage sale sign might say the sale starts at 8 a.m. That doesn't mean people will wait until 8.

By 7:40, someone is already slowly driving past the house. A few minutes later, another vehicle pulls up. Nobody wants to admit they're early, of course. They're just "in the neighborhood."

Sure. The mission is simple: find the good stuff before somebody else does.

Rule No. 2: You Don't Need Anything

This is perhaps the most important rule. You can leave the house with absolutely nothing on your shopping list and still spend three hours visiting garage sales.

Maybe you'll find an old lamp. Maybe a kitchen gadget you've never seen before. Maybe a box full of Christmas decorations that you definitely don't have room for.

That's not really the point. The point is that it was only three dollars.

Rule No. 3: A Good Deal Is Worth Bragging About

Finding something useful is nice. Finding something useful for almost nothing? That's a story. A Midwest garage sale purchase doesn't truly become valuable until you've told someone what you paid for it.

"Can you believe they only wanted five bucks for this?"

That sentence alone can make a slightly questionable purchase feel completely justified. And if you talked them down to three dollars, congratulations. You've won.

The Real Reason We Keep Going

Garage sales aren't really about buying other people's old stuff. Well, they are. But they're also about the hunt. There's something fun about following handwritten signs into unfamiliar neighborhoods and never knowing what might be sitting at the end of the driveway.

You may come home with nothing. You may come home with a trunk full of things you don't need. Either way, there's always next Saturday.
