The National Weather Service has upgraded the previously issued Heat Advisory for much of eastern South Dakota, to an Excessive Heat Warning.

The Warning includes Sioux Falls and parts of Iowa and Minnesota for Sunday afternoon and evening (August 25, 2024).

Hot temperatures and high humidity are in the forecast for this weekend. Be prepared, the heat may cause heat illnesses. Heat index values near 110 degrees are expected, The National Weather Service says.

* WHAT...Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 
  expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Iowa, southwest

* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during 
  extreme heat and high humidity events.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car
interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
