Check Out The 10 Largest Lakes in the State of Iowa (Plus a Few Fun Facts)

It's a little past summer, but it's not too late to bundle up and catch a view of one of Iowa's more than 65 lakes (Take that Nebraska, with your mere 14 lakes). If you're needing a bucket list of staycation getaways for next year, we've got you covered. For those still dreaming of getting out on the water, whether it be to fish, boat, swim, or bird watching, bundle up and try your hand at some of the best fishing holes our state has to offer.

A website called "How Many Are There" states that there are more than 65 lakes in Iowa. Not a large number compared to the "Land of 10,000 lakes up north in Minnesota" but enough to w(h)et your appetite for fun.

Did you know that of those 65+ lakes that most of them (34) are man-made? It's true. Just refer to our previous story on it for more information.

According to Radio Iowa, just 34 of our lakes are naturally occurring. The deepest natural lakes in the state are the system called the Iowa Great Lakes, surrounding the town of Okoboji.

Many of our lakes are plenty deep and wide enough for any sort of fun you want to have out there, and we've tracked down the Top 10 largest ones.

The story of Iowa's largest lake is an amazing one. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, floods in 1851, 1859, and 1903 were among the reasons for Flood Control Acts in the late 1930s and mid-1940s. Three more would take place in 1944, 1947, and in 1954, washing out six towns to make way.
