What is & Juliet? It is a show within a show, a jukebox musical that flips the ending of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The premise: Shakespeare has just finished writing the play and is reading it to his wife, Anne Hathaway, who hates the ending and insists Juliet doesn't have to die for love. So the musical becomes Anne's rewrite, performed in real time, with Shakespeare interjecting to try to steer the story back toward his tragic original leading to an ongoing tug-of-war between the two of them over how the story should go.

The music is built entirely around the pop songbook of Max Martin, the Swedish producer/songwriter behind hits for Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jovi, Ariana Grande, and many others. Songs like "...Baby One More Time," "Since U Been Gone," "I Want It That Way," "Roar," and "Larger Than Life" are woven into the plot, often recontextualized in clever or funny ways (a breakup song becomes a wedding song, etc.). The musical treats the songs almost like a "reverse jukebox" reinterpreting familiar hits to serve a new narrative rather than just stringing hits together loosely.
