May 5 is a famous holiday for the country of Mexico. It's known and celebrated all over North America as Cinco de Mayo.

Sioux Falls has a huge event that celebrates Cinco de Mayo, but for some reason will take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017: The Wells Fargo Cinco de Mayo Falls Park Fiesta.

Now before you do any celebrating, make sure you have a complete understanding about something very important. Don't make the embarrassing mistake that many people have made. Don't call it Mexico's Independence Day. Because it is not and May 5 has nothing to do with it.

Mexico gained independence over 50 years before the May 5 holiday was born. Mexico broke away from Spain on September 16, 1810. Therefore, Mexico celebrates their Independence Day on September 16.

May 5, or Cinco de Mayo, commemorates a battle against the country of France that was ruled by Napoleon III at the time. The Mexican Army took an unlikely victory against French forces at the Battle of Puebla.

The battle holds two very significant facts. One being how unlikely the victory was, as Mexico's Army was outnumbered two to one by an extremely better equipped French force.

And number two, it's the only time since that any country in North America has been invaded by another country from Europe.
