Dear Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds and Congressperson Kristie Nome:

Hey there you three. How’s it going? I hope you’re having a good holiday season while you’re getting ready for the New Year in Washington. Congratulations on coming out ahead in November’s elections. I mean, your team won! Right?

To quote King George from the musical Hamilton, “Awesome, Wow! Do you have a clue what happens now?”

Government is not football. It is not about rival teams trying to get the most wins. It is serious work, and must be treated as such.

I know many pundits are all excited about the possibility of a blank check for ideological action in 2017. But, I implore you, South Dakota’s congressional representatives, that you represent South Dakota in Congress. Regardless of who paid for your direct mailers or which side of the aisle you sit on; you represent all South Dakotans.

Working in Washington is a great thing to have on your resume, and while you plan your professional futures do not forget about the futures of the citizens of South Dakota. Please do not dismantle or destroy basic parts of our social safety net.

  • Please do not throw Social Security to the whims of the stock market and naked greed.
  • Please do not take away a basic guarantee of medical care that millions of Americans, and thousands of South Dakotans, rely on.
  • Please do not take away the preexisting condition protection that the ACA provides.
  • Please do not let ideologues experiment on our country with economic quackery.

Please take seriously your duty to "support and defend the Constitution" like you swear that you will when you’re sworn into office. Your party colleagues in Washington have glaringly disregarded their duty with regard to the Supreme Court over the last year. Do not follow suit. In fact, I ask you fight this trend.

To quote the Hamilton again, “History has its eye on you.”

Will you be champions for the people of South Dakota? The employees as well as the employers? For your most vocal supports as well as those that watch you with a skeptical eye?

I don’t care what party you belong to, I only care about the future of my family, state and nation. I ask you as a citizen to please resist the gossipy tabloidization of our government, resist the eroding of truth and be the leaders, the representatives, which we need.

Thank you for your time.
Ben Kuhns
