According to a press release from The Sioux Falls School District, parents of high school graduates for the 2019-2020 academic year received an email this morning about graduation ceremony changes due to COVID-19.

Originally the plan was to have an in-person graduation ceremony for all four public high schools on May 24, 2020. That ceremony has since been canceled due to COVID-19 regulations set in place by the CDC.

But after Brian Maher, the Sioux Falls School District Superintendent heard from students and survey data, the SFSD has looked into alternatives for an in-person graduation ceremony.

As of March 24, 2020, the plan is to have two different in-person graduation ceremonies that will take place outside on the turf at Howard Wood Field. Below is the current schedule for times and dates:

  • New Tech will graduate on June 27 at 11:00 AM – OR - July 25 at 11:00 AM
  • Lincoln will graduate on June 27 at 7:00 PM - OR - July 25 at 7:00 PM
  • Roosevelt will graduate on June 28 at 11:00 AM - OR - July 26 at 11:00 AM
  • Washington will graduate on June 28 at 7:00 PM - OR - July 26 at 7:00 PM

The SFSD hopes to be able to carry out this plan of in-person graduation ceremonies but the overall decision may be out of their control as they will rely on the state's Department of Health for guidance in these ever-changing times.
