The reason we decided to cut the cord was simply due to cost.  We've got Netflix, HBO/Max, and Hulu/Disney/ESPN for a total cost of $32 a month.  I haven't priced cable or satellite for a while but that was at least $40 less than I was paying before.

Plus, there's no contract, no service fees...nothing.

What are the Benefits of Cutting the Cord?

It's on-demand, so I don't have to pay extra for the DVR fees, and if I want to watch it on my phone, or in the kitchen, or up in the bedroom, or my kid's room, or on my wife's iPad...I don't have to rent a receiver for each room.

Finally, the exclusive content on these platforms far exceeds anything on regular cable or satellite.  Stranger Things (Netflix), The White Lotus (HBO), and The Bear (Hulu) are all shows worth the monthly fee in my opinion.

Downsides of Cutting the Cord?

That being said, there are a few things that are annoying about only having streaming platforms.

The internet has to be working at high-speed at all times for my wife & me along with each of my kids watching or listening to streaming platforms on our respective devices. Letting the TV buffer a bit is commonplace in our household.

If we'd like to watch something on regular TV, we don't have the DVR to record and watch it an hour later...so we have to wait until the following day for Hulu to drop it.

And that's the biggest issue.  Our over-the-air antenna is not great despite being hooked up to an amplifier.

Oh yeah....and live sports.

"Oh, Crap!  We Can't Get The Superbowl!"

-me about a week ago

Our antenna lets us get NBC (sometimes), PBS (a little bit), and about 19 Christian radio channels.

FOX?  Not so much. So we're going to have to invite ourselves to someone's house to watch the Super Bowl or we're going to have to do some digging to see how we can go about watching the biggest sporting event in the world.

Where to Stream Super Bowl LVII?

  • Hulu+ lets you watch live tv (including the Super Bowl) for $69.99 a month.
  • Sling TV lets you watch around 50 channels including FOX for $40 a month
  • Fubo TV gives you almost every major league sports game for $74.99 a month
  • YouTubeTV gives you "DVR" usage for $64.99 a month

In addition to those services, the Super Bowl will be streamed live on the FOX Sports website and the FOX Sports App.

Now, most of these will give you a free 7-day trial, so if you're interested in testing out the service, make sure you do it on the Thursday or Friday before Super Sunday so you know whether or not you have to make plans with your annoying brother-in-law.
