Here we go! It's time for a change...a time change. It's time to fall back because daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, and we return to standard time.

When and How the Time Change Happens

Technically, Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 AM Sunday, November 2, 2025. But to make things easier on yourself, do your clock changing on Saturday night.

They say that we'll get an extra hour of sleep Saturday night. I never notice it until late in the day, when I marvel at how early it gets dark.

This clock-changing ritual is something we all endure, yet nobody seems to like it.. According to a poll from The Associated Press, only 12% of U.S. adults like doing it. But, apparently, it's a hard thing to change.

But it's a thing that we all have to deal with, so why not make the most of it? I did some research and came up with these reasons why falling back is a good thing.

1. The Sun Comes Up Earlier (For a little while)

We all know that when we fall back, that's when winter really starts setting in because it starts getting dark really early. For example. On Saturday night, November 1, the sun will set in Sioux Falls at 6:17 PM. Starting Sunday night, it'll be dark by 5:17 PM, and get dark about a minute earlier each day until the winter solstice in December.

But, starting Sunday, the sun will come up earlier...for a little while anyway. Friday morning in Sioux Falls, the sun didn't rise until after 8:00 AM. Ugh. Thanks to the time change, though, we get an extra hour of light. Sunday morning, after we fall back, the sun will rise at 7:00-ish, then get about a minute later each day until the solstice.

2. The Time Change is mostly Automatic Nowadays

I'm old enough to remember making the rounds through the house changing all the wall clocks, then changing all the alarm clocks, TVs, VCRs, the stove, the microwave, and anything that displays a time.

But now, I'll barely even notice the change because all the clocks that I rely on will change automatically. My phone is my alarm clock and watch, so the digital fairies will work their magic while I'm sleeping. The only thing to worry about is changing the microwave.

TVs take care of themselves. We thankfully have no more VCRs that might record at the wrong hour of shows, or standalone alarm clocks that cause morning confusion.

3. The Clock in the Car Will Be Right Again

There is one clock that many people miss, the one in the car. But the good news is that you probably forgot to change it in the spring and just got used to making the time change in your head all summer. I mean, you never think about needing to change the car clock until you're driving, and then you can't do it. Then you get out of the car and forget again. So after Sunday, the clock will be right again. See, procrastination does pay off. (And when I say "You," I mean "me")

4. Free Small Talk Topic

An underappreciated gift that the time change gives us is a new small talk topic. We can take a break from talking about the weather, traffic, or the Vikings and complain about the time change.
