NBC is making a live musical broadcast a yearly holiday tradition.

First Carrie Underwood filled the shoes of Maria von Trapp for The Sound of Music, and then Allison Williams flew high for Peter Pan.

This time around, NBC is doing The Wiz. No casting has been announced, but these are some big shoes to fill. In the movie version Diana Ross and Michael Jackson were Dorothy and The Scarecrow. That is a lot to live up to.

The stage production of The Wiz in 1975 won seven Tony Awards, but the movie, even with all that star power, was a bit of a flop in 1978. However, it has gained steam as a cult classic over the years.

NBC's version of The Wiz will have a twist. Cirque du Soleil are coming in to help produce the production. So it should be a great spectacle.

I always look forward to the live production even if it isn't so great. The Sound of Music I liked, but Peter Pan left something to be desired. Christopher Walken as Captain Hook was dreadful.

As far as The Wiz goes I think someone like Keke Palmer or Jordin Sparks could be good for Dorothy. I think the Scarecrow would be a great way for Chris Brown to try to rebrand his image. Plus, he pretty much admits that he copies Michael's dance moves and singing style so why not play a role he did? The Tin Man and The Lion are little tougher. Maybe Key and Peele from Comedy Central. I don't know if they can sing though. Jamie Foxx has done pretty well with musicals in the past. (Ray, Dreamgirls) He could be a good addition.

For all we know NBC might go with complete unknowns. Keep the expectations low and then BOOM they're awesome.

NBC will broadcast The Wiz live on December 3rd, 2015. Looking forward to it.

In case you've never seen The Wiz, here's the trailer for the movie from 1978 to give you a feel for the musical.
