Ten Things Every Long-Time Sioux Falls Resident Has Probably Done
- 1
Went to Captain 11 on Your Birthday
It was a big deal to go to Captain 11 on your birthday. If you were lucky, you got the key to open the toy chest, or flipped your favorite colored jewel. Dave Dedrick was a legend in television.
- 2
Stayed at the Pomp Room Way Too Late
Whether it was Ivory, Zwarte, Janitor Bob & the Armchair Cowboys, the Cartwright Bros, Jukebox Zeros, or Violet - there was something in the air (or the carpet) that said you weren't going to be home by 10.
- 3
Scored a Deal at a Kingswood Rummage
If you ever scored a box of old football and baseball cards for $2 on a rummage sale you were lucky. The kid whose mom didn't know the real value? Not so much.
- 4
Made Out at Carousel Skate
If there's one thing I've learned as a young teen it's to step away from the crane game when the slow skate starts. Lord knows the DJ is only going to play "Faithfully" once tonight!
- 5
Completed at Least 1 Old Chicago Beer Tour
I'm proud to say I've completed a beer tour at Old Chicago. I got a bottle opener, a sweatshirt, a tee-shirt, and a cooler to prove it - all for the low, low price of $800. But it was worth it!

Had Breakfast at Ember's at 2 A.M.
Remember Ember's restaurant? This ritual usually followed the aforementioned Pomp Room thing. "I'll have the number 6 and some black coffee. Hurry up - I've got church in 6 hours."
- 7
Bought a Small Appliance with Green Stamps
I remember helping mom lick those god-awful-probably-toxic-terrible-tasting Green Stamps in a booklet - all to score a free toaster at the green Stamp store downtown Sioux Falls.
- 8
Met Your friends at Heap Big Beef
In a tee-pee shaped A-frame building located on Minnesota Avenue, Heap Big Beef sold piled-high roast beef sandwiches for less than a buck.
- 9
Bought a Used Car at Ted Tufty Dodge.
Always a straight-shooter when it came to selling cars, Ted and his staff always had great customer service. I only regret not buying a new '71 Dodge Challenger and storing it away

Went to Gitchie Manitou at Night
Five teens from Sioux Falls were attacked while camping in 1973 in Gitchie Manitou. Four were killed and the fifth was raped. For years to come, teens embarked on a journey to the area to listen for bumps in the night by a campfire.
