Sioux Empire Weather Shifts From Sunny To Stormy In Days
"If you don't like the weather here, just wait a few hours; it'll change." I think I've heard someone from every part of the county say that about their local weather. But, over the next few days, the Sioux Empire is forecast to go on quite the weather ride. Here's a preview: fire, then rain, then snow.
First up is Thursday (March 5). The sun is out today, and Sioux Falls will warm up into the 60s. But it's super dry, and when you add some wind, it's a recipe for possible wildfires. "Warm and breezy conditions will lead to elevated fire danger, especially west of I-29 this afternoon and evening. Use caution to prevent fire start, as fires may spread quickly later today," The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls (NWS) said.
Then, on Friday (March 6), we get a wet preview of spring. Late Thursday night and early Friday morning, we will probably see some rain move into the area, especially after midnight. After morningrain, it'll be back Friday afternoon. And we could have a bit of weather fun if some thunderstorms develop
"Isolated strong to severe storms are possible south of I-90. A couple of rounds are possible, late tonight after midnight, and again tomorrow from 1 to 7 PM. Quarter-sized hail is the main threat, with 60 mph wind gusts also possible. Have a way to receive warnings," the NWS said.
Then on Saturday, we could wake up to a bit of snow on the ground. Sioux Falls has less of a chance of snow than areas north and west of the city, and the temperature will determine if the rain changes to snow and how long any snow sticks around.
"Snow chances returns to the area Friday night into Saturday, with minor accumulations expected at this time. Accumulations will be highly dependent on temperatures, so amounts and risks may change. Some wintry mix, including freezing rain, is expected as we switch from rain to snow. A light glaze of ice is possible," said the NWS.
