A Sioux Falls Police Officer observed a pit bull chasing an 8 year old boy in the area of 11th St and Summit Avenue on Tuesday.

The pit bull was on a leash, but the female holding the leash was unable to control the dog.  The officer stopped and helped the boy get behind a fence.  The officer than tried to get the pit bull into the back of his patrol car.  While attempting to help the female put the pit bull into the car, the pit bull bit the officer in the hand.  The officer shot the dog once with his pistol and the dog ran off.  The dog was located at 12th Street and Prairie Avenue and was taken to the emergency vet Animal Control.  The pit bull was euthanized.  The officer received minor injuries.
