The Old Courthouse Museum is providing a peek into what it was like to learn in a one room school house on the prairie, with their new exhibit Up Hill Both Ways: One Room Schools, located at 200 W. 6th Street in Sioux Falls.

Can you imagine what it was like to go to school in a sod building, or be in charge of adding a log to a wood stove to take off the chill while you tried to learn?  In South Dakota, school houses were sod houses or buildings of log construction. In Minnehaha County, over 100 school districts built schools from 1879 to 1895, offering free education to children up to the ages of 25 in South Dakota.

Admission to the Old Courthouse Museum is free.
