Among the City Council candidates this year was a young man, Briggs Warren, who had hoped to make a change in Sioux Falls.

Warren campaigned on the platform of transparent government, infrastructure and development of Sioux Falls. With a candidate who is still in high school, one might have thought that would motivate the younger generation of Sioux Falls.

Currently, 37 percent of the Sioux Falls population is under the age of 25. For the first time ever, the Millennial generation has a voting power equal to the Baby Boomer generation. That is, if the Millennials show up to vote.

Nationally, young voters do not show up to vote because they move more often, work strange hours or just don’t have the habit of voting yet.

A volunteer from the northwest district this week said that she loves new voters.

“We’re so proud of them exercising their right to vote. When they come in here for the first time and they’re not sure what to do we are excited to help them,” she says.

Although Warren did not win the northwest seat in City council, he says that he plans to attend college this fall majoring in Political Science and hopefully returning to Sioux Falls in the future.
