Melanie Martinez Accused of Sexually Assaulting Former Friend
UPDATE (12/5): Martinez has responded to Timothy Heller's claim in a new tweet.
ORIGINAL POST (12/4): Melanie Martinez began trending on Twitter on Monday evening (December 4), but not for a performance, new video or album announcement.
The Voice alum is in hot water with fans after a Twitter user named Timothy Heller, a reported former friend of Martinez, came forward and accused the singer of raping her.
In a series of notes shared on the social media site, Heller claimed that Martinez got her high and sexually assaulted her during a sleepover.
"I have kept this secret for years, convincing myself that it wasn’t a big deal and I wasn’t hurt by it," Heller wrote. "The thought of accepting that my best friend raped me seems insane."
"One night during a sleepover, she became increasingly interested in my sexual preferences," she continued. "As someone who had previously been through sexual abuse, sex is hard for me to talk about. I was obviously uncomfortable, but she was my best friend, so I tried to be open about it."
Heller then claimed that Martinez began asking her to have sex repeatedly, to which Heller responded "no." "It went on for hours," she wrote, adding that she also had a boyfriend at the time and work in the morning. "I just wanted to sleep, I was exhausted," she added.
During another sleepover the following night, Heller alleges Martinez got her high, fondled her breasts, penetrated her with a sex toy and performed oral sex on her.
"I never said yes," Heller shared. "I said no, repeatedly. But she used her power over me, and broke me down. Just so there is no confusion, I was molested by my best friend...she performed oral sex on me and then I was penetrated with a sex toy without being asked. That’s what happened."
Heller ended her story with the hope that in light of "recent events, people will believe me," and the reminder that "girls can rape girls [and] best friends can rape best friends."
Martinez has yet to respond to Heller's accusations.
Meanwhile, since sharing her story on Monday, Heller has received nearly 40,000 retweets and countless replies, many from former fans of the singer who are now in the midst of a #MelanieMartinezIsOverParty as they denounce the pop star and purge their Melanie Martinez merchandise and albums.
