How Old Are Lotteries?

Lotteries have been around for literally thousands of years. And they have been used to finance public works for just as long.

In China, there's some evidence that a lottery may have been used to fund the building of the Great Wall.

In late medieval Europe, lotteries were held to raise money for collective defense like town walls and to help those down on their luck.

A lottery was even part of the beginnings of America. In 1612 a lottery was held in Egland to raise funds to establish settlements in Virginia. Lotteries were also used to raise funds for cannons during the American Revolution.

What Does the South Dakota Lottery Fund?

The lottery in South Dakota started at the ballot box in 1986 when voters approved an amendment to the state's constitution to allow a state-run lottery. The first ticket was issued a few months later in 1987.

The State of South Dakota says that since that first ticket over two billion dollars has been raised by the lottery.

In South Dakota, the lottery money goes to the state’s general fund which supports local public education. Part of the money also goes toward the Property Tax Reduction Fund, and the Capital Construction Fund which pays for rural and community water systems among other things.
