
19-Year-Old Baseball Player Dies After Team Bus Crashes in Iowa
A 19-year-old baseball player from South Dakota is dead following the crash of a bus that was carrying the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team.
Team Bus Crashed Into a Ditch
KCRG reports that the accident happened on Wednesday when the team bus carrying 33 people rolled into a ditch on Highway 4 west of Twin Lakes, in Calhoun County, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The 74-year-old bus driver reportedly went off the road, overcorrected, and then rolled the bus into the ditch. The team was traveling to a game in Arkansas.
One Player Died in The Crash
According to KCRG, two players were ejected and trapped underneath the bus. Student-athletes in a van traveling behind the bus reportedly gave CPR to 19-year-old Carter Johnson following the crash, however, he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The 32 remaining players also suffered injuries and were hospitalized.
Classes For Students Cancelled
Iowa Lakes Community College cancelled classes on Thursday and Friday, according to KCRG. The campus remains open for students who need to speak with counselors. The baseball team will eventually decide if they want to continue on with the upcoming season.
