2026 Sioux Falls Street Construction Season Begins
Sioux Falls is gearing up for another active construction season, with a wide range of projects planned.
The City of Sioux Falls is preparing for another busy season of street construction, with plans that range from rebuilding major intersections to upgrading accessibility features and improving neighborhood roadways.
The annual street construction program addresses the full spectrum of infrastructure needs, including preservation, rehabilitation, expansion, and full reconstruction.
Projects support a growing transportation network that spans streets, highways, bridges, trails, and sidewalks.
Along with improving pavement conditions and traffic flow, many projects incorporate utility upgrades, updated traffic signals, and enhancements for pedestrians, cyclists, and residents requiring ADA accommodations.
"Keeping our transportation network in solid condition is a top priority, and this year's projects will deliver real improvements across the community," said Brad Ludens, principal engineer. "We encourage drivers to slow down in work zones, plan for alternate routes when possible, and allow extra travel time."
Construction efforts are funded through the city's Capital Improvement Program.
For 2026, Sioux Falls has dedicated $65 million to highway and street work, an investment that reflects the city's ongoing commitment to safe, reliable infrastructure.
Project selection involves careful evaluation of multiple factors, including the condition of underground utilities, community input, and results from a comprehensive pavement survey conducted every four years.
That survey creates a detailed inventory of street conditions citywide, helping staff prioritize cost-effective improvements where they're needed most.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about project locations and plan accordingly as the season gets underway.
