The new "blackout" license plates will be legal in the state of Minnesota beginning January 1st of 2024. The new plates will feature white lettering on a black background. At the time of this post, officials have not released an official design of the new license plate yet.

The state of Iowa has already been part of the "blackout" license plate trend. This license plate design is really popular. Other states like Minnesota are beginning to introduce these plates to drivers.

MPR News says that Iowa legalized "blackout" license plates in 2019. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was quoted earlier this year in a tweet saying the "blackout" license plates are the "one thing Iowa got right."

So how much will the new Minnesota "blackout" license plates cost? According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, passenger vehicles can cost anywhere between $13 to $17. It looks like there will be an extra charge if Minnesota drivers get the "blackout" plates. MPR News explains "Minnesotans are expected to order between 100,000 and 200,000 of the plates shortly after they debut. They will be subject to a special plate fee and require a $30 annual fee." Minnesota lawmakers are also working on license plate sports designs for the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Twins, and Minnesota United.

So yes you're going to spend a little bit more for the stylish new Minnesota license plates. More information can be found here.
