A man who was a passenger in an ATV accident in which the driver got popped for a DUI later got a DUI on the same night and now undoubtedly wishes he had stayed home.

According to NWestIowa.com, the story begins when 30-year-old Helgard Michael Vrey was a riding with 27-year-old Johann Meiring Louw in an ATV about a mile north of Hull. Louw lost control of the vehicle, a snazzy new 2021 Polaris Ranger, and went into the ditch and rolled but was not damaged.

Louw was taken to a hospital with injuries while Vrey was unhurt in the accident and was transported home. Because he had been drinking, according to law enforcement, Vrey was told to stay home for the evening.

Sioux County deputies were suspicious that Louw may have been intoxicated when the accident occurred. They went to the hospital to investigate those suspicions when they discovered that Vrey was at the hospital and that he allegedly drove a 2003 Chevy Silverado to get there.

Vrey was found to have bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, was slurring speech and was not able to balance himself normally. He was taken into custody at the Sioux County Jail and charged with a DUI.

Meanwhile Louw could still lead to charged depending on the outcome of that investigation.
