The South Dakota Department of Transportation is advising motorists that Highway 81 north of Yankton is currently closed to just south of the James River bridge.

A building mover was transporting a 60-foot wide metal building up Highway 81 from Yankton to a site at the S.D. 46/U.S. 81 intersection today when the vehicle broke down and is blocking the entire width of Highway 81. Motorists are advised to take an alternate route until further notice.

The mover is hoping to have the vehicle repaired in a few hours, but it is possible the closure will last into the evening hours.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol and Yankton County Sheriff’s Dept. are currently providing traffic control support for the building move. Signs and barricades will be put in place if the closure remains in place after dark.

Highway closure information is being updated at www.safetravelusa.com/sd and on 511.
