DNA is not necessarily your destiny. In fact, clean living can sharply cut your risk of heart disease.

That's the takeaway from new research recently published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers found even if "the genetic deck is stacked against you," you can still cut your risk in half by not smoking, eating well, exercising and staying thin.

Researchers found the opposite to also true though - unhealthy habits can ruin the benefit of being born with good genes.

They say the bottom line is, despite what you might think, you do in fact have a lot of control over your future, even if there are "sharks swimming in your gene pool."
