The Sioux Empire Wacipi 2017 – A Powwow and Cultural Arts Event
Hundreds of dancers, singers and drum groups are coming to Sioux Falls to participate in the second Sioux Empire Wacipi December 15 through 17, 2017 at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Representatives from more than 500 tribes from United States and Canada are taking part in the event.
Also known as a Powwow, A wacipi (pronounced "wah-chee-pee) is a cultural gathering of tribal people for singing, dancing, celebration and socialization. The event’s website describes the wacipi as “a distinctive event that serves as a powerful cultural and social connector among Indian people and communities. In the Dakota language, the word wacipi means, 'they dance.'”
People of all ages and from all backgrounds are invited. The Sioux Empire Wacipi is presented by The Great Plains Dance Company from Sioux Falls.
Creativity and expression are a vital part of life. Music and dance are natural acts of the dissemination of cultural information because they are so visual. Dance is the exchange of celebration—dance with song disperses important features of culture—not only to the community, they belong to—but also to members of other communities.
Everyone is invited to come to the Sioux Empire Wacipi.
