‘Wonder Woman’ 2: Everything We Know So Far

Though originally billed with a December 19, 2019 release date, the film has since been bumped six weeks earlier, to November 1.

Following her milestone turn directing Wonder Woman last summer, Jenkins will return to helm the film's sequel — and this time with a major boost in salary. With a reported deal in the $7 million to $9 million range, she'll be the highest-paid female filmmaker in history.

Jenkins confirmed via Twitter in March that Kristen Wiig will join the cast as Cheetah, a feline-esque antagonist whose increased speed, strength, and agility make her a worthy foil for the ever-powerful Diana. By day, she's a wealthy archaeologist named Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva; By night, she's one of Wonder Woman's most iconic foes.

According to Vulture, Minerva is obsessed with Diana’s Themysciran heritage, which leads the pair to go head-to-head on various occasions.

The Bridesmaids star comes from a predominantly comedy-oriented background, so it will be a change of pace to watch her tackle a big action role.

After multiple allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced against Wonder Woman producer Brett Ratner, star Gal Gadot reportedly pledged to exit the franchise unless he was kicked off the project. (Ratner has denied the accusations).

Gadot later said on the The Today Show that much of the crew "echoed the same sentiments," but needless to say, Ratner received the boot.

Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly last April that the sequel will bring Diana and co. to America. "The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” she said. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

According to both Screen Rant and The Hollywood Reporter, the film will flash forward a few decades to the 1980s, amid the then-ongoing Cold War.

This jives with what Jenkins told the Toronto Sun last April. "I’d like to bring [Wonder Woman] a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing," she said.

Despite his character, Steve Trevor, being killed in the first movie, Screen Rant also reports there's a chance Pine will reprise his part in the sequel. It's unclear how exactly the movie would bring him back, but the Wonder Woman universe has its fair share of quasi-immortal beings. At the very least, there might be room for a flashback.

During an interview with Variety‘s Playback podcast in November, Jenkins said love will continue to play a central role.

"I did very much want to get to love — because that’s what [Wonder Woman] stands for — and the complexity of what we’re facing,” she said of the first film. "[The sequel] has great fun from the start and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again, and a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie.”
