Why Midwest People Refuse to Throw Anything Away

Spend enough time around a South Dakota garage, basement, or shed and you'll discover something pretty quickly: we are not great at getting rid of things.

That old chair might be broken, but it could probably be fixed. Random cables for a VCR from 1991? Better hang onto it. That piece of lumber left over from a project five years ago? You never know when it might come in handy.

And honestly, we're probably right at least once every decade.

The "You Never Know" Collection

We all have that one drawer, room or garage dedicated to things that don't currently have a purpose but we think are simply too valuable to throw away. It might be a shelf in the garage, a corner of the basement, or an entire shed that nobody wants to discuss.

Inside, you'll find jars of screws, leftover Forest Green paint from a 1994 kitchen remodel, mystery extension cords, old flowerpots, and at least one item that hasn't been touched since the Sega Genesis was a thing.

But the moment someone suggests getting rid of it, the answer is always the same:

"Hang onto it. You never know."

The Garage Is Basically a Hardware Store

Why buy something new when you're reasonably sure you have one somewhere?

The search may take 45 minutes. You may have to move three boxes, an old lawn chair, and something nobody remembers buying.

But eventually, you'll find it.

Maybe.

And if you don't, well, now you've spent so much time looking that buying a new one feels like admitting defeat not to mention taking the financial hit.

Someone Has Been Saving That for a Reason

Every household has someone who takes pride in their collection of potentially useful stuff. They may not know exactly where everything is, but they know it's in there... somewhere.

Then, once every few years, the stars align. Someone needs a weirdly specific bolt, bracket, or piece of wood, and suddenly that collection of "junk" becomes a treasure chest.

The look of satisfaction is incredible.

"See? Told you we'd need that someday."

Maybe We're Not Wrong

Sure, keeping everything isn't exactly a decorating strategy.

But there's something comforting about knowing that before making a trip to the store, there's always a chance the thing you need is already somewhere in the garage.

So go ahead and make fun of that pile of stuff nobody has touched in years. Just remember: someday, you're going to need something from it. And when that day comes, we expect an apology.
