It's Hunger Awareness Day 2017 (6/6). So can someone please explain to me why we still have kids going to bed hungry in this country? It's 2017, how can this be?

With all the wealth this country possesses, and all the food that we produce, I can't figure out why there's still so much hunger. Why?

Over the past year I've seen first hand how rampant the problem is - yes, right here in our own backyard - and how it affects people each and every day.

My daughter started her teaching career this past year in a lower-income school. And as a result, I spent the year helping out and seeing what a real problem hunger is.

We always like to talk about how great we are and what a booming metropolis Sioux Falls is. Hey folks - there's a real hunger problem here and we need to do something about it.

I'm not making this stuff up. It's happening right here and we don't see (or maybe we choose not to see it).

For most kids, summer means "care-free fun." For others it means not knowing what the next day has in store. Some really do wonder if they'll get something to eat the next day.

Yes, I know the school district offers free lunch at a few of the elementary schools, but the kids have to be able to get there. What if mom and dad are away at work?

And it's not just the kids looking for something to eat. There are those adults who make just enough money to pay the rent, but not enough to fill the fridge.

My worst fear is, not just Sioux Falls, but the entire country is becoming one of the "haves" and the "have-nots." You shouldn't have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet.

With it being Hunger Awareness Day, PLEASE take the time to see the faces of those who are hungry. If possible, contact Feeding South Dakota to find out how you can help.

There's also The Banquet, the Union Gospel Mission and various other organizations throughout the area where you can get involved and make a difference.

In this day-in-age, it's a shame - no, IT'S A CRIME - that we still have families wondering where their next meal is coming from. It's time to step up and help!
