Trashy towns are everywhere and in every state and a study crunched numbers to come up with the "trashiest" in Iowa.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines being trashy as being indecent, or "of inferior quality". RoadSnacks looked at the top 10 "trashiest" towns in Iowa and some may (or may not) surprise you.

You know these towns. You might even be from one. These are the towns that look like there's a meth lab on every corner, most of the population seems to be missing their teeth, and everyone's wearing pajamas in the dollar store. It's this vibe:

Illinois isn't perfect by the way, there are plenty of "trashy" towns in Illinois too.

And How Did They Come To This Conclusion?

It doesn't take much besides eyeballs and deduction skills to figure out what towns are trashy but RoadSnacks did data crunching from government numbers (mostly census data) to come up with this. Besides the number of white residents, they also looked at:

  • Cities that are poorer than average
  • Cities that have a lot of high school dropouts
  • Number of dollar stores
  • High drug use
  • Higher than average amount of Payday Loan Outlets
  • Number of aggravated assaults (used as the measure of violence)
  • Amount of residents on welfare

For the drug use and violence numbers, RoadSnacks looked at FBI data and for the Payday Loan Outlets, the study looked at Google Maps.

By the way, the study found that the 2nd least trashiest town in Iowa is Bettendorf. Shocker, we know.
