The latest cold snap could be here for a while. And with the snow on the way this weekend, Sioux Falls residents are anticipating a white Christmas.

Sure, it's going to get cold. Forecasters are looking at -26 degrees for Sunday morning, but that won't even crack the top 5 coldest days for the city.

Here's the top 5 coldest days Sioux Falls has ever experienced (since record-keeping began in 1893) according to the National Weather Service:

  1. - 42 Feb. 9, 1899
  2. - 40 Feb. 11, 1899
  3. - 38 Jan. 12, 1912 & Feb. 8, 1899
  4. - 37 Feb. 2, 1905
  5. - 36 Jan. 19, 1970 & Feb. 2, 1917

These are not wind chills, but rather actual temperatures.

While this weekend looks to be bone-chilling cold, be glad we're not in a sod hut in 1899! So go ahead and heat the cider and put on a pot of soup for this weekend.
