Have you gotten your flu shot this year? Statistics show more than half of South Dakota residents get theirs each year in hopes of avoiding the illness.

Governor Dennis Daugaard's office says that 56.9 percent of South Dakotans were vaccinated for the flu last year, making us the top-rated state in the nation for the third year in a row.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data finding that as a state we topped the nation's average, which was 45.7 percent.

As a whole, South Dakotans do take the illness seriously, especially with our fall/winter climates. It also is promoted well around the state and there are many places who offer the vaccination.

According to the CDC, the vaccine is recommended for anyone over the age of six months. The vaccine is generally easy to find, being offered at hospitals, grocery stores, pharmacies and various workplaces for employees.
