Get your sled ready. It's time to hit the trails for outdoor winter fun in the Black Hills where the snow conditions have improved enough to start the snowmobile season. Trails throughout the state officially open this Sunday, December 15.

According to officials in the Black Hills, snow conditions will vary to start the season. The Black Hills has seen snow accumulation, but many trails are on Forest Service roads and have been plowed. You can check out the latest map conditions to find updates through the snowmobile season.

“It’s important that snowmobilers pick up a 2019-2020 trail map,” reminds Black Hills trails manager Shannon Percy. “The trail system incurs a number of re-routes each year and having a current map will help avoid trespassing.”

Now if you're staying on this side of the state East River trails will see minimal grooming on opening day. Snowmobilers are encouraged to check local conditions before riding and keep in mind many areas across eastern South Dakota have standing water.

The snowmobile season runs until March 31 season.
