This Humble Sandwich Has Dozens of Names Across the Midwest
Recently, my teenage daughter asked for a childhood classic for dinner. She wanted ground beef in a tomato sauce on a bun. So, I made the Sloppy Joes as she requested. Ground beef with a can of Manwich sauce. A simple weeknight meal for the family.
Different Names for the Same Sandwich

Over the years, the sandwich has had variations on its basic beef, tomato sauce, and spices recipe. It is also known by several different names. None of which I'd heard of until I moved to Sioux Falls from western Nebraska.
The names vary based on location, mostly. I went to an extended family get-together in Iowa once, where I was promised "BBQs" for lunch. My mouth was all ready for ribs when it was surprised by big vats of Sloppy Joe meat.
