Thunderstorms Bring Impressive Rainfall To The Sioux Falls Area

Lots of us around the Sioux Empire were woken up by a line of thunderstorms that blew through the area overnight.

Throughout Wednesday (July 9), a cold front moved west to east across South Dakota, pushing a line of sometimes severe thunderstorms ahead of it. A little after midnight on Thursday, the storms moved through the Sioux Falls area, bringing wind, small hail, and lots of rain.

Strong Winds And Hail Hit Sioux Falls, Making For A Stormy July Night

According to preliminary reports, Thursday morning, western Sioux Falls caught the brunt of the rain with nearly an inch and a half of precipitation.

Hail up to an inch in size was reported in Sioux Falls between midnight and 1:00 AM Thursday. During the storm, winds in Sioux Falls gusted to between 50 and 60 mph. Earlier Wednesday night, 80 MPH winds were reported in central South Dakota.
