A Sioux Falls grandparent got scammed out of thousands of dollars.

"We had a man on Friday who received a call from somebody he thought was his granddaughter," according to Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens.

"Unfortunately he didn't do any checking. The caller made the claim that she had been arrested and needed some money to get out of jail. He wired over $20,000. He didn't hear anything after that. Couple of days later he heard from a different relative and learned the granddaughter was in a whole different state and hadn't been arrested."

If you get one of these calls, Clemens says hang up!

"You receive anything unusual like this call when someone is asking for money take the name, number and do some checking. Make some phone calls on your own. Most of the time it's going to be a scam. It's very rare that any reputable company or government agencies are calling asking for money, gift cards. That should be an immediate red flag."

Unfortunately, the Sioux Falls grandparent will probably not get the $20,000 back.
