As a safety measure for residents, City council reviewed proposed changes to the city’s peddler and vendor license.

Councillor Rick Kiley reviewed proposal changes with city attorneys after receiving calls from several residents concerned about interactions with door to door salespeople.

Jim David legislative operations manager for the city of Sioux Falls outlaid some of the changes proposed, including that the salesperson only being able to enter the home if specifically being invited and wearing the Peddler Vendor License as a lanyard.

A criminal history would prohibit an applicant from obtaining a vendor’s license and the applicant would have to list previous cities visited along with driver's license information.

Councilor Rick Kiley would like to provide a resource on Sioux Falls dot org where residents could confirm the person at the door has obtained the proper license to sell door to door.

Politicians, not for profit and businesses returning after hanging a tag on the door and being invited back by the homeowner would be exempt from having to obtain a license.

Soliciting door to door without a peddler and vendor license would be subject to a fine up to 500 dollars, 30 days jail or combination of both.

Council will review this proposal at its second reading December 15, 2015.
