Olympic Skier Suffers Frozen Appendage During Race, And It’s Not His Arms Or Legs
When you compete to be the world's best at a sport involving the cold, you better be prepared for that cold.
In Beijing this year, the Men's 50km Mass Start Cross Country Race was shortened to 30km, but that still wasn't short enough for one Olympian who had to use a heat pack to thaw out his dangler.
Finland's Remi Lindholm finished the race in an hour and 16 minutes, beating the course as well as the strong and freezing winds. The conditions led to his penis freezing.
“You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished … it was one of the worst competitions I’ve been in. It was just about battling through,” he told the media, according to New York Post.
The race's organizers were doing their best to prevent injury and frostbite for the racers, first delaying the game, and then shortening the race.
For the racers, the thin suits worn for the event don't hold in much heat. Lindholm said he had to use a heat pack to thaw out his third ski-pole.
“When the body parts started to warm up after the finish, the pain was unbearable,” he added.
This isn't the first time that Lindholm has crossed the finish line with a frozen popsicle. A similar incident happened last year at an event in Ruka, Finland.
