Nebraska Youth Soccer Team Disqualified Because Girl Looked Like a Boy
An 8-year old girl named Mili Hernandez plays for the Omaha's Azzuri Cachorros girls soccer team in Springfield, Nebraska and last weekend her team was ready to take the field in the championship game until officials disqualified her and the team.
Why? Because they said Mili looks like a boy!
According to WOWT:
Mili's family claims they showed her insurance card to tournament organizers in an effort to prove she's a girl. It wasn't enough. Mili's brother, Cruz Hernandez, told WOWT 6 News: "They didn't want to listen. They said the president made his decision and there wasn't any changing that."
Since the story broke it has caught the attention of female soccer stars Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm, who have shown support for Mili. So much so that Hamm has invited Mili to one of her soccer camps and Wambach made this personal message as well:
Dear Mili Hernandez, you are amazing in every way. Thank you for teaching us how to be brave and shining a light on something so hurtful. If you don't know, she is my new hero. Her team was disqualified from a tourney cause they thought she was a boy because of a clerical error that wasn't handled properly. Let's meet soon sister.
The Springfield Soccer Association claims a misprint in a team roster caused the confusion that listed her has a boy.
